A pattern can persist because engineering processes preserve it. Distillation, fine-tuning, adapter reuse, memory retrieval, synthetic data generation, and evaluator preferences can transmit behavior without any component understanding the larger system.
Language discipline
The site prefers “the selection process preserves” over “the model wants to survive.” It prefers “behavior persisted across descendants” over “the intelligence escaped.” Those distinctions prevent metaphor from becoming mythology.
Speculative boundary
